Changes over the past decade have instilled in the legal profession an awareness of the fragility and importance of mental health. The American Bar Association has long been urging legal professionals to take mental health and wellness seriously, as our profession is at risk. This program will offer attendees tools to promote balance and happiness in their personal lives and careers.

Legal Writing | 6:45 - 7:45PM | Professor Andrea Martin, J.D. & Jan M. Tamanini, Esquire
This program will discuss the basics of preparing legal documents which are well-written and effective. Students will receive tips from a legal writing professor, and a practicing attorney. Types of legal writings covered will include pleadings, other court documents, formal correspondence, and legal memorandums.

Designed to teach new attorneys about differences between types of billing arrangements and the ethical considerations impacting all types of attorney billing. Attendees will also be shown an example of a good engagement letter and provided with tips for drafting them.

One of the most difficult non-substantive aspects of practicing law is learning how to balance the (sometimes competing) interests of clients. This panel will offer attendees insight into how attorneys can manage client relationships in a way that is mutually beneficial.

Will cover expectations for lawyer conduct in a court room, offered from the perspective of both the presiding judge and their clerks.
Jan Matthew Tamanini

Jan, a Harrisburg-based attorney, has been a plain language devotee since her pre-law-school years working as a broadcast and print journalist. With a solo practice in business and estate law, Jan has been a CLE instructor for the PBA and PA Bar Institute for both business law and legal writing/effective communication.
A member of the PBA’s Plain English Committee since its inception in the mid-1990s, Jan chaired the committee from 2010 through 2015. She has held writing and editorial positions for regional and national legal and non-legal publications. Jan was one of nine US solo attorneys profiled in Carolyn Elefant’s book, Solo by Choice, The Companion Guide: 34 Questions That Could Transform Your Legal Career, published in June 2011.
As a writer, Jan has been a frequent contributor to online and print publications for lawyers, businesses, and animal welfare groups. She has served on national, state, and local bar association committees and councils. Jan also has worked on the boards of several nonprofit organizations, particularly for domestic violence services, the arts, Alzheimer’s Disease, AIDS patient relief, and animal welfare.
Before founding her law firm in 2007, Jan worked in state government for over 25 years (with the
Independent Regulatory Review Commission, Securities Commission, PennDOT, Governor’s Office of the Budget, and Department of General Services). She represents business clients in administrative matters and contract claims against state agencies at the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Board of Claims.
A committed advocate for greyhound adoption, she has two retired racers at home as well as six “greyt” angels. She’s also proud mom to two accomplished adult children and grandma to two.
